EPUB Text Review Workflow for Editors

Confirm usage rights first
EPUB extraction should be used for files you created, own, or are allowed to inspect. The fact that text can be extracted does not change copyright, license, or distribution rules. Rights review is part of a responsible editorial workflow.
Check metadata before text
Title, creator, language, identifier, and package metadata help confirm that you opened the expected file. This is especially useful when filenames are generic or several versions of a draft exist.
Review chapter order
EPUB packages can store content, navigation, and spine order separately. After extraction, compare the first few headings against the ebook reader view so notes do not accidentally follow file order instead of reading order.
Use extracted text for review tasks
Plain text is useful for copy review, search, excerpts, accessibility preparation, and migration notes. It is not a replacement for the EPUB reader view when typography, images, links, or navigation matter.
Handle footnotes and images carefully
Footnotes, endnotes, captions, and image descriptions vary by publisher and export tool. If these elements matter, inspect the original EPUB structure or reader view rather than relying only on plain text.
Share excerpts, not full books
For collaboration, send the smallest relevant excerpt with the source title and chapter context. This keeps review focused and reduces rights and privacy exposure.
